1அர 19:16,19-21;
கலா 5: 1,13-18;

13th Sunday of Ordinary Time-Year C 30-06-2013
Commitment:  Forgoing……Focusing!
I Kg 19: 16b, 19-21; Gal 5: 1, 13-18; Lk 9: 51-62

Dear Sisters, Brothers and Children, we are gathered on this Lord’s Day to celebrate our life joining with the Eucharistic Lord and all our members of this community. We lack commitment as we are pre-occupied with scientific and technological advancement. We use various gadgets and instruments more than our rational knowledge. We are called to renew our commitment in this Eucharist to be a human, to be a good citizen and be a Catholic as a follower of Christ.

I am too young to think of God and religion, this is the response of teenagers and youth.
I have many things to do that I do not have time for Church on Sunday in my Schedule.
I lost the track of my Children and it is hard to tell them to be consistent.
The excuses we give show that we lack commitment. We have commitment as a human person, as a good citizen and as followers of Christ.
It is frequent, common and acceptable practice that a person from the religious life and from Priesthood ministry walks out or leave.
I find no fulfillment and no satisfaction in my religious or life in the ministry is the answer of some in today’s world. This is due to lack of commitment.
The scandals and remarks are the signs calling us to renew our commitment in this year of faith.
The readings of today teach us what this commitment means?

In the first reading of today, Elijah was able to preach to kings and overcome the false prophets, until the queen, Jezebel, became angry with him (1 Kings 18-19.) Then he fled the kingdom and returned to the Lord to resign his commission. Prophet Elijah who have gone through such hard times facing Ahab and his wife Jezebel, following the voice of the Lord, now passes on the responsibility and the call of Almighty to Elisha. Elisha indirectly says I am not ready as he wanted to kiss parents before he leaves, here Elijah reminds that, it is not I who call you rather the Almighty and it should a be total and complete commitment. Then Elisha using all the oxen and yoke, throw a big meal for all his workers, Elisha prepares a sacrificial meal which he ate with his people, his helpers, before leaving all things and following the prophet. This reveals the total commitment of Elisha. I am going to commit for the Lord and His people, hence, I will not think of or coming back to my past and previous way of life and work. He forgoes by destroying everything in order to focus on his ministry and mission. In the early history of salvation the 'mission' of being a Prophet was passed on from one prophet to another. Sometimes the prophet had a token or symbol of his ministry. In the case of Elijah, this was a cloak, which he threw over Elisha. Elisha – who became Elijah's successor – left everything behind him and committed himself to his prophetic role. He is forgoing certain things in order to have undivided and single minded focus to the task and call. This is true and total commitment.

In the Gospel, we get the response of the persons who did not want to commit. The reasons are that, I want to bury my father; I want to tell my people are avoiding responses. I want to tell my people, refers to not taking responsibility and the unwillingness as well as the unpreparedness. “Let the dead bury their dead”:  This response may sound too harsh. When the person said I want to bury my father, father may not be sick, or dying rather may be elderly.  He simply wished to stay with his father until his death. Jesus knew that later he would find another reason to delay the call.  In Aramaic, the word for dead is metta; the word for town is matta. Therefore, this saying of Jesus is more reasonably rendered as “Let the town bury their dead.”
So Jesus says, the people of the town will look after, your excuses are eternal. He gives the typical example of the plowman for commitment. Plowman must look ahead rather than back. Looking back while plowing causes crooked lines in the field. One should be aware of top priority, over every other concern. If someone were to keep looking back at what he had left behind (family, friends, etc.) or even at the work he/she had already accomplished, he/she would not be fit for the single hearted dedication required of a disciple. So one can focus totally only one forgoes the past or what is left behind.
The commitment we have before us are three; they are Marriage commitment, Priesthood or religious commitment and Baptismal commitment. All these commitments demand total commitment of focusing of our self and forgoing of something behind. Marriage commitment demands to give priority to the family and family alone, as husband, as wife as parents. Religious or Priesthood commitment challenges to give priority to ministry and be a shepherd. The very moment our focus is gone then we stop forgoing ourselves and our wishes and temporary pleasures of power and popularity. Our Baptismal commitment is being renewed every time we participate in someone’s Baptism and during Easter vigil services. These commitments remind us that we share and partake with Jesus priestly, prophetic and kingly ministry and mission. Shall we focus on this mission and ministry by forgoing other excuse. Baptism is for mission and ministry, so, what is my task-Amen.

-Amen.
